Om Shanti Om is a 2007 Indian Hindi-language romantic fantasy film written and directed by Farah Khan, co-written by Mayur Puri and Mushtaq Shiekh, and produced by Gauri Khan under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan as Om Prakash Makhija, a poor junior film artist in 1977, who falls in love with a secretly-married film actress Shantipriya, portrayed by Deepika Padukone (in her Hindi debut). Her husband and a film producer Mukesh Mehra, played by Arjun Rampal, betrays her and murders her in a fire. Om witnesses this and is severely injured while trying to rescue her, resulting in his death as well. Being reborn as rich superstar Om Kapoor in 2007, he sets out to seek revenge from Mukesh with the help of Shanti's doppelganger Sandy. Shreyas Talpade and Kirron Kher appear in the film as well and cameos from several Indian film celebrities are seen in several sequences and songs.
The film is known for its memorable dialogues, which are often quoted by fans and critics alike. Some of the most famous dialogues of Om Shanti Om are:
"Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost" (The movie is not over yet, my friend): This is the last dialogue of the film, spoken by Shah Rukh Khan as he breaks the fourth wall and addresses the audience. It implies that there is always hope for a happy ending, no matter how difficult the situation may seem.
"Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho ... to puri kainaat usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai" (They say that if you desire something from your heart ... then the whole universe tries to make it happen for you): This is a dialogue spoken by Shah Rukh Khan as Om Prakash Makhija in 1977, expressing his love for Shantipriya. It is also repeated by him as Om Kapoor in 2007, when he meets Sandy, who looks exactly like Shanti.
"Ek chutki sindoor ki keemat tum kya jaano Ramesh babu" (What do you know about the value of a pinch of vermilion, Mr. Ramesh): This is a dialogue spoken by Deepika Padukone as Shantipriya in a scene where she confronts her husband Mukesh Mehra about his affair with another actress. It is a reference to an iconic dialogue from the 1989 film Ram Lakhan.
"Itni shiddat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai ... ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki saazish ki hai" (I have tried so hard to get you ... that every particle has conspired to make me meet you): This is a dialogue spoken by Shah Rukh Khan as Om Kapoor in 2007, when he confesses his love for Sandy. It is a variation of the dialogue spoken by him as Om Prakash Makhija in 1977.
"Main agar kahoon tumsa haseen ... kaaynaat mein nahi hai kahin ... taareef yeh bhi to sach hai kuch bhi nahi" (If I say that there is no one as beautiful as you in the whole world ... this compliment is also nothing but the truth): This is a dialogue spoken by Shah Rukh Khan as Om Prakash Makhija in 1977, when he sings a song for Shantipriya on the sets of a film. It is also the title of the song, composed by Vishal-Shekhar and sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal.
